What you need to know about GPS

Navman 7100Find the GPS navigation software of your choice and a suitable GPS Receiver that supports the software.

  • Ensure that you buy both the software and the unit from the same seller.
When you buy it from the same vendor, you will get a bundled package. You will also get full guarantee for both products.
  • The GPS solutions that you are seeking must work with the device. Programs that work for touch screens will not work for non touch screen and vice versa.
  • Never buy old models and out of date GPS Receivers as the chipsets of the Receiver may not support the new versions of the software. These units are less sensitive and more prone to errors.
  • Ensure that you are installing all maps on your storage card. Once you install the software, you may wish to download the required maps from the vendor’s web site. You will need to make two copies of the maps, one for the device and the other for the storage card.
  • If you are traveling in your vehicle, get a portable type of power adapter to charge your device and the GPS Receiver.

There are different types of GPS Receivers available in the market:

  • Bluetooth GPS receivers are the new breeds of devices that allow you to communicate with a Windows Mobile device in a wireless manner. You must have Bluetooth working on both ends.  This system is ultra portable and doesn’t need a cable to join the device and the unit. It has an efficient source of power backup and it can receive the signals in an efficient manner.
  • Cabled GPS receivers can connect through a cable to the connectivity port on the bottom of your mobile device. You can use them when you traveling in your vehicle. However, you may have hardware and connecting incompatibility issues troubling the devices. You must have a good quality cable in order to make the device work better
  • CF or SD card GPS receivers are tiny and ultra portable and they can slip easily into the card slot on your device. Another plus point is that they are smaller than the Bluetooth devices and do not require cables for connecting it with the mobile.  But, it draws its electrical power from the device, thus draining the battery faster.

Always insist on buying a device with built-in GPS connectivity. These are not only portable solutions but also efficient in providing you the right directions. However, they can drain your battery faster and within no time; ensure that you switch off the GPS Receiver when not in use. Well-known vendors like HP (hp.com), E-TEN (etencorp.com), Pharos (pharosgps.com) offer devices with in in-built GPS Receivers.  Most of these are costlier touch screen devices, but a few numbers of non-touch screen smart phones also possess integrated GPS capability.
