How To Recover Lost Space In The Storage Card

All mobile devices come equipped with disk tools and a card reader to restore lost space in a given storage card.

To do this, follow these simple steps:

  • Insert the card into a card reader attached to the desktop PC.
  • Now, right click on the Windows Explorer and choose Properties
  • Select Tools and Click on the tab Check Now
  • Now, check the box titled “Automatically fix file system errors” and “Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.”
  • Now, you will need to rename some of the repaired files and their extensions, before shifting them back to the storage card.

Here are some ways of recovering lost space:

At times, large files like video and song clippings may get corrupted, as they are copied on a storage card. As a result, you will loose some file storage space. Most of these corrupted files are invisible and it is almost impossible to use the device’s File Explorer to recover the corrupted files. It is possible to use a card reader and your PC to restore lost space; you can even find and fix the missing files.

Follow these steps to perform the recovery operation:

  • Insert the storage card into the card reader attached to your PC or laptop; make sure that you are using Windows XP, as the default operating system.
  • If you are not using Windows XP, your PC may find it very difficult to detect the cards.
  • Now, Windows will classify the storage card as an ordinary removable hard drive. Now, you can use the disk repair utilities designed for hard disk drives.
  • Right click  on the removable drive icon in the Explorer and choose Properties icon from the pop up menu
  • Go to Tools tab from the drive properties dialog box and choose “Check now” button
  • Tick the box titled “Automatically fix file system errors” and the one highlighted “Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.”
  • Once you choose the options, click on the Start icon

These two-way analysis and repair operation may take more than 5 or 6 minutes; thus, greater the storage capacity of the card, longer will be the overall process. Once you complete the process, all recovered files will be on top, in a separate folder, and on the storage card and with a label called “FOUND.000.” Within the folder, you can locate all the files that the recovery process was able to repair and modify.

But, the extension names for these files are always incorrect. Now, you can go through these individual files and rename them with different extensions such as AVI, MP3, MPG and WMV, and try to open these files, until you can confirm that you have the right extension name, against all of them and that you can open them successfully.  Now, you can either move them to their intended location or just delete them if not needed. Thus, with this method, you can regain the lost space and free up much needed space for other applications.
